A Maxwellian Look beyond Opaque Interfaces

چکیده

I wonder if James Clerk Maxwell, Scottish mathematical physicist and father of the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, could have imagined being included on the cover of a book dealing with a sensing technology used to locate the position of buried pipes, to analyze the integrity of buildings, and to uncover ancient archaeological sites The idea is by Raffaele Persico, the author of “Introduction on Ground Penetrating Radar: Inverse Scattering and Data Processing” (Persico, 2014 [1]). Aware of the fact that his work is not just for beginners, Raffaele Persico guides us to the fascinating, as well as complex, world of the physics of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data processing, with the competence of the researcher, the teacher, the technologist and, let me just say, the sensibilities of a humanist. I know the author and his passion for Dante and the Divine Comedy, which could have inspired him in the structure of the work and the communication method chosen for the contents. The reader feels the presence of the author (Virgilius) who guides them (Dante), tests his/her understanding, invites him/her to reflect on how to maximize the retrieved amount of information, and other typical ‘obsessions’ of remote sensing scientists.

Binary masks yielding Gaussian light distributions in Maxwellian view

Gaussian light distributions are important stimuli for vision research, but are difficult to produce for Maxwellian viewing conditions. In this study, two binary Maxwellian-view masks which produce smooth light distributions on the retina were considered: one was an out-of-focus circular aperture; the other was an in-focus pattern of opaque squares with a prescribed size distribution. The diffr...

Beyond metaphors and icons: towards a perception-action model for graphic user interfaces

How do we effectively understand graphical interfaces in order to act in the virtual ambient they create? Metaphors in user interfaces are meant to give the user a familiar context in which to act: an office with recycle bins, desktops, folders and files. The problem is that incoherence lies everywhere if we look beneath

Numerical Modeling of Non-equilibrium Plasma Discharge of Hydrogenated Silicon Nitride (SiH4/NH3/H2)

In this work, we model a radiofrequency discharge of hydrogenated silicon nitride in a capacitive coupled plasma reactor using Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function. The purpose is to investigate whether there is a real advantage and a significant contribution using non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function rather than Maxwellian one for determining the ...

Non-Maxwellian electron distributions in clusters of galaxies

Context. Thermal X-ray spectra of clusters of galaxies and other sources are commonly calculated assuming Maxwellian electron distributions. There are situations where this approximation is not valid, for instance near interfaces of hot and cold gas and near shocks. Aims. The presence of non-thermal electrons affects the X-ray spectrum. To study the role of these electrons in clusters and other...

Translucent and Opaque Direct Volume Rendering for Virtual Endoscopy Applications (ST)

Virtual endoscopy applications frequently require the visual representation of several material interfaces to show the relevant data feature to the user. This requires the specification of complex transfer function which classify the various materials and color them appropriately. In this paper, we explore the use of the direct volume rendering for virtual endoscopy. We specifically look into t...
